Mentor "Relationships"
APA recently launched a new on-line mentor matching program. In
creating this program, our goal is to build a network of experienced
APA planning professionals who can provide assistance and advice
to students and new planners who are APA members. The mentoring
program is comprised of different services. One core service
is a database that students and new planners can easily search
and choose mentors based on their individual needs and selection
criteria. Students/new planners and their mentors will establish
the terms and conditions of the mentoring relationship, including
frequency of meetings and communication. Other mentoring services
in the future may include coordinated lectures at universities,
streaming videos of significant lectures posted on our website,
and career panels at state and regional conferences.
In order to make this program a success, we ask that
you click here to fill in your biographical information online. You will also need to check the box on whether you wish to be
a mentor.
Mentor "Relationships"
Here are some details about the mentoring relationship. Members
may add up to 10 mentors to their list of "My Mentors" for
easy retrieval later. The following additional features will
be included for the mentoring directory:
Mentors
will be notified by e-mail whenever a member adds them to their "My
Mentors" list. Mentors may designate the maximum number
of relationships they wish to engage in. The default is set to
10. Mentors will be able to view the list of members who have
added them to their "My
Mentors" list. The fields the mentors see will be identical
to those in the member directory. However, even if a member chooses to be excluded
from the member directory, his or her information would still be available
to the mentor. Adding a mentor to the list of "My Mentors" assumes
that the member wants to give the mentor his or her contact information. Mentors
who have exceeded their capacity for mentoring relationships will no longer
be visible in the directory.
The
groups who have been invited to be mentors thus are: Fellows
of AICP, APA Board Members, AICP Commissioners, Chapter Presidents,
Division Chairs and Division members.
We hope you will consider participating in the mentoring
program. Please direct any questions to aicp@planning.org
